Morrigan Academy: Bloodline Legacy · Book 2 · Nika Gray

Short introduction

The academy paired her with the man she blames. His wolf knows she is his mate.

Synopsis

Lyra Lancaster knows how to look fine. Smile, keep her blood magic steady, and never let anyone see how much grief lives beneath the surface. Especially Dorian Valmont—the werewolf she cannot forgive.

A magical music competition was supposed to be her chance at something of her own. Instead, it binds her to Dorian for three months. Rehearsals, classes, and magic that refuses to keep its distance make avoiding him impossible.

Dorian knows something Lyra does not: she is his fated mate. He also carries a secret that could destroy the fragile trust growing between them. Winning her heart will take more than a bond she never asked for.

As danger presses against Morrigan Academy’s wards and family loyalties pull them apart, Lyra must decide whether the man she hates is the one she can trust—and Dorian must decide what he is willing to risk to deserve her.

Chapter 1 Look Inside

Chapter 1: Lyra

I push through the heavy oak doors, and the November cold follows me inside, clinging to my coat and settling into the massive space that is the Great Hall. It’s darker than it should be at eight in the morning. The usual breakfast chatter has been muted into anxious whispers and the scraping sounds of silverware against porcelain.

Samhain was two weeks ago. Another pillar cracked during the ritual Evangeline and Cassius Morrigan did to fix the Sanguine Seal connected to the Morrigan pillar, and nobody’s pretending things are fine anymore.

I navigate between the long tables toward the Sanguine House section, keeping my expression pleasant and my posture relaxed even as I pass familiar faces. I smile at a girl from my Blood Magic Foundations class and nod at a senior who held the door for me yesterday. The good girl mask fits like a second skin after years of practice, but inside all I want to do is scream and throw shit.

The breakfast spread is less elaborate than usual matching everyone’s mood. It’s like the whole place is filled with shades of gray. I grab toast and eggs and coffee strong enough to strip paint keeping my hands steady as I pour cream into the chipped mug. Nobody watching would guess that I barely slept last night. Sleep hasn’t come easy since Mom died and the nights since have been passing by like a blur with the numbness fully setting in. The numbness helped me get through school. Sort of.

I find an empty spot at the end of a table and sit down my tray. I stare at the wooden top, scarred from decades of students carving initials and spell formulas into the surface. I trace the rune for Algiz, wishing I could find my own sanctuary, while I eat. The toast tastes like cardboard, but I choke it down anyway.

“Lyra.”

I look up to find Linney sliding onto the bench across from me, and she looks terrible. She has dark circles shadowing her navy eyes and her usual meticulous appearance has been disheveled enough to horrify her if she noticed. Her chestnut hair is pulled into a messy bun and her shirt is wrinkled. I should ask how she’s doing. That would be what a good friend would do.

“Linney.” I sip my coffee and then lean forward. “Are you okay?”

“Fine.” My response comes out too fast as she stabs at her eggs without meeting my gaze. “Just tired.”

I don’t believe her, but I let it pass for now because when people ask me how I’m doing I don’t want to speak about it either. She’ll talk if she wants to. At least I noticed and asked.

We eat in silence for a few minutes while I catch snippets of other people’s conversations around us.

“...heard they’re adding more wards every day...”

“...my cousin said the crack is getting worse...”

“...Valmont Pack sent additional monitors...”
